Nearly in Bloom

You might remember this post from last year about the daffodil field on Cape Cod that a man planted in memory of his beloved wife.

Well, this beautiful patch of land on the side of one of the most scenic drives along the length of the Cape is nearly in bloom.

Well, at least it was roughly two weeks ago. By now, I'm sure it's a field of golden dreams.

I am so in love with this place. Perhaps it's the beautiful story of an undying love between a man and his sweetheart. Perhaps because you can't look out at a field of golden yellow without a smile on your face. Or perhaps because this field signifies so much more to me. The beginning of a season of good things. Things that aren't visible to anyone except for at their peak for a few precious weeks out of the year.

Most people don't know this field exists unless they happen to drive by during one of those weeks. But there are some of us that do know what's beneath the green grass, the leaves after fall and the snow in the winter. We know there is promise for a beauty that we can only see briefly, yet it exists beneath the surface year round.

These blooming beauties made me see the brightness among all the grey even though their golden glow was barely visible until you walked among them. They haven't been at their prime in nearly a year, yet here they are. As lovely as ever. Ready to bloom. Ready for big things to happen.

Searching for the Sun

It's been a rainy, dreary week in New England. It's the kind of weather that makes you wish you could spend days snuggled up with a cup of tea. The sun is supposed to show up this weekend, but I thought I'd share some sunshine from a few weekends ago at the Cape. Perhaps tomorrow morning, I will wake up to cloudless skies and a calm ocean? Here's to hoping!

Have a beautiful weekend!

Hunkering Down

This weekend the Northeast is due for a few days of rain. Tropical depression rain. Meaning a downpour all day for two days straight. What does that mean for me? Two whole days of nothing but naps, cups of hot tea, reading, and a chick flick {or five}. I'll be hunkered down at home for a solid two days.

I. Cannot. Wait.

This is the first weekend in months that I haven't traveled to the Cape or another lovely destination. I dearly cherish my weekends and time spent with loved ones, but sometimes you need to recharge and relax. This is also my last weekend at home before I begin five more weeks of whirlwind events and traveling. Then six weekends from now, I will be calling a new place home. It's all becoming a little more real each day.

Hunkering down isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes it's a good thing {the best thing} to lay low and take care of yourself for a little while. While the world is an unrelenting storm outside, you have the calm and peace that the feelings of home provide. The best part is that after the storm, the I always seem to feel renewed, reenergized, and ready to take on anything.

A Sunset Moment

My favorite moments of the day are usually sunrises and sunsets. This was taken two weeks ago over the Bass River on Cape Cod. The water was unusually smooth except for the waves left by a little boat  out for an evening ride. Little moments of peace like this spent with your favorite people are unforgettable.

Winter Walk

There is nothing more peaceful and calming to me than walking along my favorite beach.

Even if it's -2398423 degrees outside.

My spring fever has become nagging lately. After 60 degree days in Oklahoma a few weeks ago, I find myself staring longingly at my spring dresses when I really should be looking for a parka and snow boots.

All in good time.

If that good time was tomorrow though, I'd be OK with that.

Swings

{Corporation Beach - Dennis, MA}

I swung on this swings every summer of my childhood. Once you swing high enough, you can see the Cape Cod Bay over the grasses and prickly bushes. If it's a clear day, you can see the dunes on the other side of the bay and Provincetown at the very tip top of the Cape. I remember swinging here with my brother and cousins - each of us trying to swing higher than the other.

It was a very serious competition.

I love visiting this place in the winter. The serenity that encompasses this little strip of seashore during the off-season is hard to imagine on the simmering days of July and August. The summer months have become seemingly more crowded than the summers of my childhood. The swings are always crowded, the beach is full to the brim with little space between chairs and umbrellas.

But on this grey, wintry day, this place was so peaceful. There were some retirees taking an afternoon stroll, a man playing fetch with his dog, and people like me just taking in the muted beauty. I sat on these swings, remembering the happy evenings I so often spent here. I must have looked like a complete loon smiling to myself on the swing seat that does not accommodate my derrière as easily as it used to. But it's good for the soul to spend time at your happy place every so often. So many corners of this beach are filled with memories, but my afternoon on the swing set made me remember the childish, innocent and carefree feelings that are so easy to forget, but remain somewhere deep inside us.

Some Beachiness for a Wintry Day

I'm having some serious spring fever right now. I would do absolutely anything to be sitting on a beach right now. Not a snow covered beach, I mean a tropical paradise.

And we are only halfway through January.

Uh oh.

So, I thought I'd share a post I wrote early last summer but never published. I would do anything to accelerate into June so I can spend some time on my beloved Cape beaches.

Dennis is my favorite.

It is the town I spent a week or two in each year growing up. It's the town in which we have a cozy Cape cottage that is now our weekend retreat. It's the town of so many childhood memories.

Growing up, my parents, brother and I would journey from Texas to the Cape and meet up with my aunts, uncles and cousins. We would take over Corporation Beach with our umbrellas, beach chairs, shovels and pales. So many happy days were spent in the sun and sand along the bayside shores. I still get that happy-go-lucky childish excitement when I go to these beaches.

I don't build as many sandcastles as I used to, and I'd probably kill myself if I tried to skimboard again. I rarely get in the chilly water (usually around 65F on a warm day) except on those scorching days of July and August. However, I love watching today's children do the things that used to give my brother, cousins and me hours of entertainment.
